Lemongrass essential oil has been used in India ages ago, and today it has numerous uses that would be practically helpful to us and it is famously known as insect repellent. The lemongrass plant belongs to the Poaceae Plant Family. As what others don’t know, lemongrass has too many species but its chemical constituents differs, and citral is the main content that can be found in all types of lemongrass essential oil. For your information, the East Indian Lemongrass essential oil and the West Indian are the most used oils and they are definitely the same in terms of aroma and color but the latter is more refreshing than the former. Lemongrass essential oil is steam distilled from the fresh leaves of the Lemongrass plant, which can grow of up to 5 feet high in a much faster time than others. It can be seen growing abundantly in Madagascar, Malaysia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. The oil is in yellow color and has lemony, grassy aroma.
This essential oil has been used in treating certain illnesses like fever, cough and flu. In Chinese traditional medicine, they use it as a treatment for headaches, colds and rheumatism. In India it is currently use as an insect repellent. Though this oil is not toxic, but it may cause skin irritation especially for individuals who has sensitive skin, so better be careful when using this. And more often than not, you must seek for professional advice when needed to avoid accidents and further damage.
