Essential Oils: What Are They?

Share

are not just wonderful fragrances. They are also man’s first medicine, for people and pets as well as liquids carefully steam distilled from plant materials. Discover that there is much more to these precious than just beautiful fragrances.

Oils are the Lifeblood of the Plant

Have you ever torn the leaf of a plant and watched a tiny bit of liquid ooze out of the tear? That liquid ooze is the of the plant. This liquid helps to carry out the plant’s life function, just like blood. The oil also helps the plant to repair and heal when it has been damaged. It also functions in much the same way for people too.

Essential Oils are Liquids Carefully Distilled from Plant Materials

Any part of the plant can contain oil. The leaves, stem, flowers, bark, root and seeds can all contain oil. The plant material must be carefully steam distilled to extract the oil. The best pure are slowly steam distilled using low temperature and low pressure. The oil from one part of the plant may have different healing properties than from another part of the plant. Each has its own unique fragrance, constituents and healing potential.

Essential Oils are Wonderful Fragrances

They are often used for perfumes, potpourri and scented candles because they smell so wonderful. The fragrant oils from plants have tiny molecules that are very active. They are energized and bounce around quickly leaping right into the air. That is why we can smell them so easily. The fragrance of the oil travels through the air because the molecules are so tiny and active.

Essential Oils were Man’s First Medicine

Oils from plants were actually the first medicines used by man. Plant oils have been used by the priests and physicians of many civilizations such as the Egyptians and Chinese. Even back in biblical times, plant oils were used for anointing to bring healing. Some examples of plant oils used in the Bible are frankincense, myrrh, hyssop and spikenard. These oils were used for supporting emotional health, spiritual wellness and physical needs as well. Bible references indicate that oils were used for cleaning (Exodus 30:22-29), skin care (Ester 2:12), stopping plagues (Numbers 16:46-50) and anointing for healing (James 5:14).

Essential Oils are Natural Healing Tools for People and Pets

Today people are using these same oils to support the health of their entire household. All family members, including pets, benefit from the emotionally and physically healing properties of oils. For example, lavender is antiseptic, calming and relaxing, peppermint is soothing to the digestive system and geranium supports skin regeneration. Every system of the body can be strengthened by using carefully selected . When using essential oils for health purposes, be certain that they are pure therapeutic grade oils. Oils that are synthetic or diluted with other substances will still smell nice, but will not have the same healing properties as those from pure plants.

Essential Oils and Ayurveda: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Life

Share

is the oldest system of natural medicine that we know. And the principles of can bring deep insights to help us understand and prescribe the use of oils in day .

Ayus means ‘life’ or ‘lifespan’, and Veda means ‘complete knowledge’. So Ayurveda is complete knowledge about life, and about health and how to maintain it.

The central tenet of Ayurveda is that good health is a natural state of life — a state of balance. So health becomes disrupted when imbalances accumulate. Therefore it aims to detect early accumulation of imbalances in the system, and prevent them from developing into symptoms by using a variety of methods. In this way, Ayurveda is primarily preventive in its outlook.

One of these approaches is through massage, which is highly rated in Ayurveda. Massage is recommended in terms of daily self-massage (you can try a self massage using warm natural sesame oil every morning before taking a shower; some people notice massive benefit continue through the day, particularly if they suffer from poor circulation), and also using macerated oils in specific treatment regimes.

This is very similar in outlook and approach to our approach to aromatherapy, which uses blended into a ‘carrier oil’ (vegetable oil), so let’s see what our modern understanding can learn from the approach.

According to Ayurveda there are three principles (doshas) that operate in the physiology and in Nature: vata, pitta, and kapha.

Vata governs the function of the nervous system, and is quick, light, cold, rough, moving. People who have a strong vata constitution tend to walk quickly, talk quickly, listen quickly (so they may interrupt you before you’ve finished your sentence). They tend to be of thin build, frequently very bright and alert. When they become imbalanced, this may lead to anxiety, worry, restlessness, insomnia, and also cold hands and feet. They would tend towards dry hair, and dry skin.

Pitta is hot and sharp, and governs metabolism and digestion. People with a preponderance of pitta tend to have energy, ambition, and drive. Because pitta is hot, they suffer less from cold; but on the other hand may tend to overheat in the summer, and may suffer from skin disorders.

Kapha has the qualities of heavy, cold, oily and stable. Kapha people tend to have large framed bodies, and may put on weight rather easily. The hair is thick, lustrous, and they are often very attractive physically. They frequently exude feelings of stability, peace, and contentment. But when out of balance, kapha leads to a lack of flexibility, inertia and lack of enthusiasm.

A qualified ayurvedic practitioner will be able to determine the relative balance of vata, pitta and kapha to a great degree of accuracy by using pulse diagnosis.

However the simple description above should be able to help us to quickly recognize which essential oils could be indicated.

For someone with a vata imbalance, we want to provide ease, ease and comfort, reducing agitation and excess mental activity. So we should be on the lookout for oils that are sweet, warming, soft, stabilising. Try Sweet Orange, Ylang Ylang, Vetiver, Sweet Basil, Jasmine, Ginger, Frankincense, Patchouli.

For a pitta type, we will be looking for cooling oils. So think in terms of Mint oils, True Lavender, Rose, Sandalwood, and German Camomile.

Remember that kapha is heavy and oily, so we should be looking for essential oils that are light and will cut through that quality. Think in terms of the confers (pines, firs, spruces), Black Pepper, Tea Tree, Rosemary Verbenone, and Lemon.

It goes without saying that the areas of both ayurveda and essential oils are immensely detailed; and either could take a lifetime of study. Yet the principles are simple and have a commonsense value. And best of all, they are easy to apply.

What Is Aromatherapy and Does It Work?

Share

Smell is the ability for us to perceive odors within our environment. An odor can revive a memory, give us a feeling, remind us of a person, place or thing, or even enhance our mood. This is has been introduced as an alternative medicine to be used with or without other modalities to enhance both psychological and physical benefits to the body. uses naturally extracted aromatic essences or oils from plants such as flowers, bark, stems, and leaves to improve physical and emotional health, and to restore balance to the whole person. can benefit the mind, mood, cognitive function and overall health.

Aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years dating back to antiquity. Then dried plant materials were infused into fatty oil, heated and then filtered. In addition to the potent odor, these oils were thought to have medicinal healing properties. This is not entirely inaccurate especially since some of the oils used today have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. During the time of the were being distilled and used as medicine. The Crusades are what is thought to have moved essential oils from India, China and Egypt westward. In the 16th and became popular with European herbalists. In 1907 Scientists and doctors began studying the components of essential oils and determining the individual plant chemistry. By 1937 a French book was written on aromatherapy and by World War II Dr Jean Valnet used essential oils as an antiseptic to treat wounded soldiers. By 1950 Marguerite Maury an Austrian beauty therapist introduced essential oils into massage therapy. She went on to establish the first aromatherapy clinics in Britain, France, and Switzerland.

Aromatherapy is a natural, non-invasive therapy designed to affect the whole body and person. The art and science of aromatherapy involves not only the aroma of specific to treat the mind and body, but by applying the essential oils directly to the skin, the oil can be absorbed into the bloodstream to alter the body chemistry, support the body systems, and improve moods and emotion. Therefore aromatherapy does not just treat a symptom or disease, it assists the body in its natural ability to balance, regulate, health and maintain itself. Overall aromatherapy promotes the health of the body, mind and spirit.

Aromatherapy can be used in three different modes- aerial diffusion, direct inhalation and topical application. When used in conjunction with other modalities the therapeutic potential increases. Aerial diffusion enhances ones environmental fragrance while disinfecting the air as well. Direct inhalation works to disinfect the respiratory system by decreasing congestion, enabling expectoration in addition to psychologically enhancing ones mood, energy and mind. The benefits of direct inhalation include stimulating brain function, uplifting, stimulating the immune system, relaxation and mood enhancement. Topical application can be done through massage, baths, compresses, and therapeutic skin care. Through this method a patient can see a reduction in tension, and pain, while promoting healthy circulation and restoring balance.

Although the efficacy of aromatherapy has not scientifically been proven herbalists, aroma therapists and massage therapists have long used it on their patients. The benefits that patients have demonstrated include pain relief, anxiety reduction, enhanced energy, increased short-term memory, relaxation, , reduced itching, clarity of mind and mood enhancement. Aromatherapy benefits the person as a whole rather than treating a symptom or illness. The mechanism behind aromatherapy is not fully understood however; the influence of aromas on the brain especially in the limbic system through the olfactory system is thought to produce the desired benefits. Additionally the (naturally occurring chemicals) have positive effects upon the body. When used correctly aromatherapy is subtle but effective.

Aloe Vera Gel For Acne Questions Answered

Share

William asks…

?

I have been recommended to use aloe vera gel to treat my acne. I’ve decided to find out how to use aloe vera gel for my acne and the results of it before buying aloe vera gel. Have anyone tried using aloe vera gel to treat her acne? Can you please share with me how you applied the aloe vera gel? Do you wash it off in the morning after you apply it at night or do you have other ways of applying it? Thanks! :D

:

6 things must be done EVERYDAY to reduce/prevent acne: 1)Wash, Tone, Moisturize Face 2 or 3 Times 2)Don’t Let Dirty Things Touch Face 3)Eat Healthy Food, Limit Junk Food 4)Take Multi Vitamin Mineral 5)Drink About 64 oz Pure Water 6)Do 20 to 30 Min Aerobic Exercise. Doing 1 or a few of these will NOT keep skin clear as possible!

Use 3 things on face: Wash, Toner, Moisturizer. Do this at least 2x a day, morning & night (possibly 3rd time, midday, if super oily/sweating). Products that work for one person may not work for another person, so always do small patch test on face for a couple of days to see how skin will react to product! Don’t quickly jump from product to product! Give skin a break before trying new product to prevent irritation! Natural & gentle products are sometimes more effective than acne medicine!

NATURAL & GENTLE: Wash face with warm water & Purpose Gentle Cleansing Bar by Johnson & Johnson. Tone face with Witch Hazel (Thayers or Dickinson’s) or Homemade Toner. Witch Hazel reduces bacteria/swelling, minimizes pores, helps acne. Make toner by mixing 1 part With The Mother (Try Bragg) with 5 parts pure water. Test small area! If burns/to drying, use more water! Use at least 1 part water! Less Water = Stronger, More Drying Formula. This vinegar kills bacteria, absorbs excess oil, dries out pimples, lightens scars, refines skin tone. Don’t use other types of vinegar, will not work! Moisturize face with Lily Of The Desert Gelly, its 99% organic, contains vitamin A, C, E! helps renew skin cells, heals blemishes/scars. Don’t use other brands of aloe, has very little aloe & to much junk in it which can irritate skin!

ACNE MEDICINE: Try 1 of these active ingredients for a period of time to see if skin improves: Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, Sulfur, Alpha Hydroxy Acid, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid. Try acids by Perfect Peel Solutions, Cellbone Technology, Skin Laboratory, Alpha Hydrox/Neoteric Cosmetics. Acid heals acne, cyst, scars! If over the counter stuff doesn’t work, see doctor to get stronger medicine.

FACE PRODUCTS & MAKEUP: Only use oil free products that won’t clog pores & cause acne! Try Revlon ColorStay Combination/Oily Skin Foundation. Using a Makeup Setting Spray (Skindinavia, Model In A Bottle, Urban Decay, Sephora) will give you shine-free skin all day! Old makeup, makeup tools harbor bacteria, Use fresh makeup, wash/replace tools often! Wash makeup off face before going to bed!

FACE MASK can be done once a week. Make mask by mixing plain oatmeal with water. Oatmeal is soothing, absorbs excess oil, makes skin smoother. Wash face with warm water, apply mask. Leave on for 30 min. Rinse off with warm water, Apply toner & moisturizer.

HANDS-HAIR-STUFF: Keep dirt & bacteria at bay to prevent breakouts! Don’t touch face with hands, Don’t let phone nor dirty oily hair touch face, Don’t lean face on objects, Clean glasses often, Wash pillowcase, sheets, blanket, washcloth, towel often. Always wash hands before applying face products!

KEEP MOVING: Aerobic Exercise, Face Massage, Dry Skin Brushing increases circulation & delivery of nutrients to skin cells, encourages good blood supply, helps remove toxins, controls acne breakouts! Do 20to30 min of exercise, everyday or every other day! For outstanding results, do all 3 activities, everyday! When exercising, drink water & immediately take a shower to remove sweat & dirt! For face massage, wash hands & face, apply toner, use aloe vera as massage gel. Do 10 min massage before going to bed. Don’t wash face again, let aloe dry on face. Buy any book on face massage (Ten Minute Facelift by Jennie Harding). Dry Skin Brushing must be done correctly & carefully, read book, Dr. Berkowsky’s Vital Chi Skin Brushing System by Bruce Berkowsky! Never brush delicate face! Take shower after brushing to wash off dead skin & dirt!

DIET & LIFESTYLE: Research has shown that there is a connection between certain kinds of food & acne! Read book The by Alan C. Logan & Valori Treloar! This book has detailed info on what to eat and not to eat to help reduce/prevent acne! Always eat healthy food – fruit, vegetables, lean meat, fiber, beans, wholegrains, foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids, zinc, vitamin A & C. Limit intake of frozen meals, dairy, milk, fat, oil, butter, greasy/fried foods, sugar, candy, salt, dessert, caffeine, coffee, pop, alcohol. Always avoid cigarettes, tobacco, illegal drugs! Its hard to get all needs, so take supplement everyday! Overdosing on vitamins minerals from food or supplements is dangerous! Drinking about 64 oz of pure water everyday improves skin quality, flushes out toxins, delivers nutrients to skin! You can also include 100% Fruit Juice as part of your daily total. Acne can be caused or aggravated by constipation, make sure bow movements are regular! Getting enough sleep helps skin repair itself!

Helen asks…

?

Ok so i bought a moisturizing aloe vera facial gel that’s 98% Aloe Vera. I have some acne that i’m currently using medication from the doctor for. I want to use the aloe vera gel to help get rid of some of the scars and as a moisturizer seeing how dry the medication makes my skin. I’m just wondering if it will cause anymore acne?

Chloe Adisson answers:

The aloe vera will just dry out ur skin and acne!

James asks…

for acne?

On the back of the bottle it say “aloe Vera gel cools and soothes minor skin irritations, abrasions, and sunburns. This blend of Aloe Vera Gel helps restore moisture to damaged skin and helps prevent drying and peeling. Great for softening and nourishing skin year round.” Can i use this for my acne? If i can how would? like how often and all that? on the front it just says ” Aloe Vera Gel, moisturizes and soothes dry, sun damaged skin” don’t no if that helps or not but please help!

Chloe Adisson answers:

It’s great for acne if you’re not allergic to it. Most people aren’t – it’s an ingredient in most products. If you’re allergic to onions, garlic, or tulips, that would be an indicator of an aloe vera allergy.
As for application, apply just enough so your skin feels moist, use morning and night as with any other moisturizer.

Sandra asks…

aloe vera gel for acne?

hey i have heard that aloe vera gel is great for acne but im not sure if i should buy the product or not.
does it reduce redness and marks? i have mild acne but does it make the acne worse? like more pimples?
thanks!

Chloe Adisson answers:

Don’t put it specifically on pimples. If you have one that you picked at and its dry and flaky, it seems to work pretty ok at helping that. Putting it directly on festering pimples would make them worse. Or it did for me, anyways.

Laura asks…

aloe Vera gel for acne/acne scars?

i just need a simple answer don’t tell me about some other product that works great all i want to know is does aloe vera gel work on acne and acne scars? and if a constantly use it will it lessen the amount of acne?
p.s i use the real plant gel

Chloe Adisson answers:

Aloe vera pulp is good for digestive organs & as well as it retains the moisture of the skin .If you are asking about prevention of acne by using it alone , My answer probably may be or not . Acne problem is due to hormonal imbalance & disturb immune system of the body.
Aloe vera alone can not can improve both of the above.
As you have restricted to answer more other than aloe vera.So I finish here.

Detoxify Or Die Questions Answered

Share

Betty asks…

What’s the deal with the ?

It seems like everyone attacks dieting with lectures on anorexia and bulimia. I just read about someone wanting to reduce their caloric intake to between 300-400 calories a day and she only got one actual answer, the rest were comments “You’re going to die.” Granted, the question seemed extreme, and there was more desperation behind it than anything else…but if you consider the alternative…obesity is just as deadly. Atherosclerosis, Myocardial Infarction, Diabetes..and the list goes on and on. Overeating is just as serious, if not worse. Then, when you consider the countless websites that talk about “fasting” for 30 days on WATER ALONE for weight loss and body detoxification, how can you justify what’s healthy and what’s not? Starving yourself for thirty days is acceptable if you’re doing it to detoxify your body…but cutting your caloric intake down is anorexic? It was my understanding that your body had three sources of energy…glucose, glucagon, and fat. Once your body is starved of glucose and glucagon, it turns to its fat store, and you lose weight. EVENTUALLY, your body will eat away at its muscles, but not before the fat..Someone please correct me if I’m wrong. I’m not anorexic or bulimic, nor do I approve of such behaviors. I just see people seeking being shunned for it. I’m just trying to understand why.
I’m not looking for dieting advice either. I don’t have a weight problem.

:

Haha. You sound really really educated about this kind of stuff.

I think people are being criticiced for seeking diet advice because in my expierence with Yahoo Answers alot of the people are Underweight already and still they want to lose more weight. When you thing about it there are 11 and 12 year olds on this site wanting to know if the Master Cleanse or drinking grapefruit juice all day will help them lose weight.

And usually people are not shunned for asking for diet advice when they actually need it. Like if there overweight or obese, buy yeah that happens a lot. People tend to lecture people on stuff like that because it’s preventable. Just like obesity is, however there are more questions that pertain more to low weight.

Just my opinion :]
And yes, I agree with everything you said.

Donald asks…

Who would do this?

By Detoxing and Rejuvenating your Mind, Body and Spirit,

1. You allow yourself to heal from any toxins that have been held inside your body,
2. You allow your Mind to release any harsh feelings or Sad emotions,
3. You allow your Spirit to become open and free. Once you ahve Detoxified and Rejuvenated your Mind Body and Spirit,
4. You can finally Allow yourself to enjoy real Homeostasis.

(Homeostasis: Optimal Well being, Optimal Health, At a point in your life when all is ok, and righht with you Physically, Mentally, Emotionall, and Spiritually.)

Stress can make any disorder worse. May it be Mental Emotional or physical. Stress is when you worry way too much about things that can be fix with a little effort on your own personal part.
Stress has been proven to cause serious health risks, such as heart disease, Endurance Problems, Fatigue, Emotional Imbalances, etc.
There are options to dealing stress and weight loss. Such as Detox plans and rejuvenation Plans, as the one I have enclosed.

I definitely stress that you consult your physician, about anything new or changes in your daily regimine. As this plan will affect other areas of your Daily living and Medications.

Please feel free to Copy and Print this to your own Blank Text and save it and print it out when you go to your DR again.

Laura asks…

When did people start using the word “toxin” to refer to waste?

When I was in middle school, “toxin” meant something that could reliably be used by an animal, in small doses, to kill another animal. Or otherwise something that was fatal in small doses. “Toxic”, too, had an implied lethality.

Now, it means any substance that can cause discomfort. Also, when people talk about using diuretics such as tea to flush waste from the body, people say they are “detoxifying” and “flushing toxins” from their bodies.

The way other people use that word and the way I use the word are incompatible, since if there were enough toxins in your body for a cup of green tea to have a noticeable effect on their level, you would be long since dead and should probably be walled off so that other people don’t touch you and die as well.

So when exactly did this change?

Chloe Adisson answers:

At least in the UK, it seems to have started in the early 1990s.

I had a look in NewsBank (the UK and archive), and until around 1992 there were several dozen hits in papers a year, all using it in the trad scientific sense. Then over about a decade it creeps up to 2000+ hits, either using it to refer to general pollutants or (mostly) the fictitious poisons that “detoxifying” is alleged to remove.

Richard asks…

Wouldn’t it be great if a kind of penicillin for mental health were developed?

In physical health, before antibiotics, people with infections had to rely on their immune systems to fight certain diseases. Many times nature didn’t do such a good job, and people got really sick or died. But now that we have antibiotics, you just take a pill for a few days, and you’re totally cured. medicine has done better than the body’s natural disease-fighting abilities.

In mental health, we’re not so advanced yet. People with “infections,” in the form of , suffer for years or lifetimes – depression, OCD, addictions, even suicide. The cures are still relatively primitive. Talk therapy can take a long time to resolve problems. Medications like antidepressants control the symptoms, but they don’t really cure the underlying emotional issues.

Wouldn’t it be great if someone developed a way to quickly detoxify the brain? I’ve imagined that if someone could study brain waves of what happens in therapy, and then stimulate the brain in the same way, maybe people could have quick and lasting relief from their emotional problems. Nowadays some doctors do use electroconvulsive therapy, but that’s sort of like hitting the reset button on a computer, and the problems can come back. I wish there was a more controlled, painless way to free people from painful emotional conditions for good.

Chloe Adisson answers:

Were working on it.

Jenny asks…

Should I start smoking pot again?

PLEASE READ BEFORE ANSWERING!

I’ll try to make it short and sweet. PLEASE HELP!

Any ways. I’ve always had problems socially. I never really fit in due to my awkward personality and horrible social graces. I just had a disposition people didn’t like as a young girl. Growing up I had friends but being so problematic we parted ways or we’d just stop talking. I started smoking pot when I was 15, roughly a month before my 16th birthday (I am 21 now) and at first it made me a giggling, happy, social butterfly and I enjoyed it alot. But later on it started making me paranoid and giving me anxiety and it made me think of death and just became a scary , unenjoyable thing. It made me paranoid about people and very self-conscious about how I looked. But for some reason I kept doing it. It came to a point where I could only smoke pot alone because around other people I couldn’t enjoy myself cause my anxiety would go out of control. Alone I didn’t get too anxious but I still felt some anxiety there. It gave me horrible anxiety, I’ve ALWAYS had anxiety, but I feel pot amplified it. The reason I would keep smoking pot is because I wanted it to be the way it was when I first started and I thought maybe I’m just going through a phase with it and eventually I’ll start enjoying it again, and once in a blue moon it would give me that good feeling so I was willing to roll the dice and smoke pot just to possibly get that feeling again….

Long story short. I am a loner with no social skills. I dont know where I went wrong to end up like that but I feel the pot didn’t help and got my anxiety out of whack.

I want to work on becoming social and less of a neurotic anxious freak. I quit smoking pot but i’m thinking, the weed already did its damage… What good will it do to stop now?

If I keep off weed will I detoxify? Will all those weird paranoid thoughts I have unravel and will my brain go back to normal?

Will quiting really help me become more “normal?”

Chloe Adisson answers:

Well, you shouldn’t smoke pot in the first place. It only gives you a false sense that you’re happy and okay and that your life isn’t like it really is. Quit smoking it. Maybe if you start joining more clubs and really, really, trying to socialize, you might feel it lot better. Good luck!
