Rolfing: What Is Structural Integration?

Share

So what exactly is Rolfing? To many it conjures up as an extremely painful experience. Unfortunately, there is very little truth to this rumor. It can create intense sensation. in should always be a brief experience to alert the Rolfer to fascia that is stuck in an adhesive pattern. A well trained Rolfer/Structural Integrationist should be conscious and respectful of their clients needs.

Many will tell you they are willing to deal with pain, if the pain is gone once the therapy session is over. My practice is more gentle, I would rather apply the technique more than once to allow the body time to adapt to the pressure. All any of us are doing, when we do massage type therapy, is to have a conversation with the body’s own homeostatic response mechanism. I for one don’t believe we need to create more pain to relieve painful chronic conditions. Let’s take a closer look at Structural Integration or Rolfing as its called.

The imbalance, caused by force vectors that have entered our geodesic dome like structures that we call a human body, can create changes at the fascial and emotional levels of our being according to Dr. Rolf. These muscles, tendons, bones and ligaments all react to these forces that are inherent in gravity. Rolfers have been trained in the nuances of structural integrity and are able to create balance in bodies that have become imbalanced in gravity, through skillful application of touch.

All the structures of the body are linked together, including the internal organs, by an interconnected fascial web. This web is easily influenced by external force. These external forces eventually are responsible for imbalance in the web and cause painful responses. Rolfing is not like Swedish massage. Rolfing can effect those imbalances in a beneficial manner

Rolfing, although a form of massage therapy, doesn’t in any way shape or form resemble classic Swedish massage. The strokes are much slower, often times not even moving, while the Rolfing practitioner waits for the fascia to release and lengthen.
Fascia is an organ of form and through deliberate and focused application with passive and active movement of the client’s body during the application with an accurate tool (hand, fingers, elbow, ulna bone etc) painful conditions often disappear as the body takes on a more upright postural attitude. Through the Rolfing technique the elasticity and sliding capacity of the issue can be restored and the body realigned to become more fluid and pain free. Through educating our clients to use certain movement tools, the conscious effort on the client’s part can often create changes that last a lifetime!

The of Rolfing is that it offers a tactile and chemical free approach to pain management and is appreciated by any performance athlete whose training allows them to be able to perceive even the slightest change in function and balance. I highly suggest Rolfing to become part of your regime for not only prevention but performance enhancement. It is an outstanding regime that has been used successfully for nearly 50 years as a manual therapy for dealing with pain and performance.

Help For Lower Back Pain

Share

Nobody enjoys having a sore lower back. Yet and still many suffer from it. That is a strange thing to say because most cases are completely manageable. Even so, it is very likely that you or someone you know could use some low back relief. The majority of cases come from core muscles (abs, hamstrings, low back, butt) being weak and inflexible. Therefore, if you keep these muscles strong and flexible you are removing the primary root of a sore lower back.

I want to give you some exercises you can perform to reduce or eliminate pain in your low back. Your best bet is to combine these with a total body workout plan. If you are carrying excess pounds, you need to take healthy steps to lose weight. Strain is put on the discs and lower back muscles from extra weight. Also be sure to have your lower back examined by a medical professional before attempting this routine.

1. Stability ball hyper-extension – Lie down on the stability ball with your stomach and upper thighs covering the top of the ball. Place your feet flat up against a wall with your toes touching the ground. Your fingers should be on your temples and your elbows pointed out to the side. Without moving your feet, lean forward at the waist as far as possible. Now pull your torso up as far as you can so that you feel your lower back tighten as you reach the end of each repetition. Do 5-20 repetitions of this .

2. Stability ball reverse hyper-extension – Use the same stomach and thigh body position on stability ball as you did for hyper-extensions. Place your hands on the floor so they are shoulder width apart. Without moving them, lift your legs up in the air as high as you can. There should only be a very slight bend in your knees. Do 5-20 repetitions of this exercise.

3. Toe touch stretch – Keeping your knees straight and your feet together, slowly bend over. Let your arms hang loose and have your fingers point to your toes. Gravity should be doing most of the work here so you should be relaxed and not pushing the stretch. Wait 30 seconds and then stand back up.

4. Cat in the alley stretch – Get down on your hands and knees. Pull your shoulders forward and curve your back until you feel the muscles stretch. Stay in position for 30 seconds.

Low back will fade away if you get this in two times per week. Whether or not you eliminate your sore lower back is up to you. Putting up with it as a result of neglect is like getting your car stolen because you left the keys in the ignition. While I feel your pain, you could have avoided the whole mess. Don’t forget prevention is always the best choice.

Adding free workout plans to your routine can transform your body for the better. Free workout routines on Vaughn’s site can get you up and running.

Using Balms To Help Aches And Pains

Share

Centuries ago, before there were chemically manufactured products, apothecary owners would learn the properties of various herbs, plants, and other organic matter to help soothe and treat common ailments like headaches, muscle , menstrual cramps, , and a myriad of other complaints. Today, the use of natural, plant-based remedies for similar complaints has seen a resurgence. People are gravitating towards products that are natural and revisiting the properties of those specific ingredients exclusive to nature. Topical balms containing natural ingredients are as effective at treating common aches and pains as they were hundreds of years ago.

Combining the principals of aromatherapy and herbal properties, balms and lotions that can be applied to the skin are soothing and healing; they can actually improve the appearance of skin as well. With ingredients like lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, sandalwood, pepper extracts, cardamom, and many others readily available, there are an array of body balms that do more than just moisturize and heal dry skin. Not to mention, the combination of aromatic ingredients with healing herbals means modern-day balms are not only pleasant to use, but pleasant to smell.

Common ailments that can be helped with the use of healing balms include headaches, sore muscles, tired painful joints, and even insomnia. Many natural ingredients have remarkable healing powers, like Cayenne pepper extract as a natural anti-inflammatory and camphor as a natural muscle tension reliever. Combine these properties with essential oils chosen for their aromatic properties – like calming lavender – and you have the perfect blend of soothing ingredients.

While various combinations of natural ingredients can be used to promote healing of many common ailments, body balms are unequivocally the best type of skin product for soothing dry, cracked, and itchy skin. Better absorbed than water-based lotions, body balms with natural moisturizers can be used on the most sensitive of skin and still heal even the toughest, driest body parts. Dry or cracked lips, hands, feet, knees and elbows can feel soft and supple again with the use of body balms.

For moisturizing purposes, look for balms containing olive oil and beeswax. Olive oil is a wonderful ingredient for treating dry skin, dry hair, and dry, cracked cuticles. Beeswax helps soothe, heal and protect the skin by sealing in the body’s natural moisture. All natural and organic products ensure you aren’t using any harsh chemicals or artificial ingredients that simply mask problems and further dry the skin.

Natural body balms can also be used for children. Many children suffer from chapped lips and cheeks, especially in the winter as exposure to cold, dry air is maximized. The problem is magnified by the tendencies of children to lick their lips and wipe their little noses with their hands which spreads more moisture about the face and hastens chapping. You can treat this problem with body balm. By using balm with natural ingredients, you don’t have to worry about your child ingesting small quantities by continued licking or chewing.

Lavender is another practical herb that has been used in pediatric aromatherapy for decades. Lavender is naturally calming and promotes relaxation and sleep. You’ve probably seen major national brands of baby shampoos, washes, and lotions that contain lavender for use at night. There is real science behind this concept, as well as the use of eucalyptus as a relief from sore, stuffy noses.

For grown ups, balms can serve as muscle and joint but rather than smelling of camphor alone, why not use a body balm infused with sandalwood, lemongrass, or other aromatic ingredient so as not to offend the olfactory senses? For the purpose of soothing sore muscles and joints, look for body balms that also contain pepper extracts, arnica or peppermint. Some balms are designed to provide penetrating heat, while others, especially those containing camphor or eucalyptus, are designed to soothe by cooling. Alternate both varieties for improved relief.

Whether looking for a product to soothe, heal and protect dry skin or a product that will simultaneously moisturizer and soothe aches and pains, body balms are a terrific product choice. There are many different varieties – some all natural, others all natural and certified organic – but body balms containing any of the aforementioned ingredients are an excellent addition to your bath and body collection as well as your home cache.
