Low blood circulation to hair follicles a significant cause of hair loss?

hair loss

Bella asked: I read in a hair loss magazine about hair loss and low blood circulation, what is your opinion about it?

Yes Bella, as a registered nurse I know that this is a true statement.  The reason why is because of the oxygenation that is carried by red blood cells.  Oxygen is needed for growth of every tissue and cell and without it the tissue and cell will die.  The same with hair follicles no oxygen, no hair growth.  Haven't you heard people say to brush you hair while holding you head towards the floor or  brush your hair a hundred time.  This is all to promote more oxygen or red blood cells to the hair follicles.   More oxygen equals hair growth.  No oxygen equals hair loss.

Benefits of Drinking Water

The benefits of drinking water have been proven because studies have shown that around 80% of the world's population is dehydrated. The chief reason for this condition is over consumption of caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee that make the body lose water. Water is a naturally available liquid that is the most important factor in human survival. Water comprises about 2/3rd of our total body weight. The biggest irony is that most of us don't know what to drink when we are dehydrated. The answer is simple. Drink water!

The benefits of drinking water is an important factor in the proper health of the body systems. Drinking water has several health benefits. If you have high blood pressure or cancer, drink as much water as possible because water helps to stablized the blood pressure and promote the healing process of cancerous cells. Taking in adequate amounts of water if your are a diabetic is especially important because high blood sugar actually dehydrate the blood cells and causes the blood sugar levels to rise even higher. That's why when a person come in the hospital in ketoacidosis the first line of action is to start an IV and get the person properly hydrated. Often, people forget to drink water unless they feel very thirsty. To help you to remember to drink water at regular intervals, you can set a timer or buy a watch that is equipped with a timer.

It is better to drink smaller quantities of water more frequently than to drink a lot of water at one time. It is recommended to drink 8 to 12 oz a day and if you have not been drinking water regularly, you should double the recommended amount because your cells are already dehydrate. Make sure that you don't too much drink water in the morning prior to beginning any physical activity. It is very essential to plan a proper routine for water drinking.

Water is necessary for proper digestion and absorption of essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, etc. that our body gets from the food we eat. Also, detoxification of the kidneys and liver along with the removal of toxins and wastes from the body happen to be major benefits of drinking water. You should not wait until you are dehydrated to drink water. Drinking water regularly is imperative because dehydration can result in serious illness.

The diverse benefits of drinking water include sustaining energy levels, being mentally and physically alert, removing toxins and wastes from the body and maintaining healthy skin. Drinking water also helps in reducing weight and helps with hypothyroidism weight gain. Since water is a natural appetite suppressant, it helps to cut down overeating and that helps to maintain your proper weight. Which is especially important with hypothyroidism. Doctors often say that, when you feel hungry, your body is actually craving water and not solid food.

Bear in mind that water has its exclusive qualities and other beverages cannot replace the benefits of drinking water. So make sure you drink adequate quantities of water every day to live a healthy and happy life.

Are You Feeling Depressed?

Depression can hit some folks out of no where and this is often a melancholic state that can't be cured by vast amounts of chocolate or your very dessert. Depression is more serious than most folks care to think about and this is where I found myself at age 42.

I was at work one day and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Depression! I had been noticing my mood shifting from one extreme to another. My husband also noticed it but didn't know what to do. One day I felt good and the next day down. It had gotten to the point I didn't enjoy simple things like going to the movie or an outing with my family.

So this one day at work I just wanted to walk away from it all. It was not to the point where I wanted to harm myself but I was so depressed until I just wanted to cry my eyeballs out. I knew at this point I needed to do something. So I made an appointment with my doctor and to top it all off I also had gained 20 pounds in 3 months which really made me depressed.

So what follow was a world-wind of test from an MRI to blood work.  Through all of this, the only thing they found was my prolactin level was low.  But to make a long story short, I was suffering from an underactive thyroid even though it was not diagnosed in my blood test.

Did you know an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism causes depression, weight gain, low sex drive, insensitive to cold and heat, high cholesterol and hair loss? The thyroid gland regulate so many functions in our body and is very important for overall health. Even though my doctor did not put me on thyroid medication, she did prescribed Sarafem (prozac).

I did not want to take prozac so I looked for an alternative treatment to help me with my underactive thyroid and what I found was Thyromine.  This product has worked wonders. I feel better and I stopped gaining weight and started losing. I'm no longer running from my husband if you know what I mean. So if you are suffering from depression, it could very well be your thyroid. Thyromine has worked wonders for me I am sure it will for you.

Can I Manage Type I Diabetes?

Type I Diabetes also called juvenile diabetes can be debilitating disease for those who do not know how to take care of themselves.  If you have type I diabetes you are quite aware of the symptoms of high and low blood sugars and what effect this have on your body.  As a RN working in home health and the hospital, I am always looking for ways to increase the knowledge of my patients.  Diabetes can be a very scary thing but with the proper diabetes treatment, it is most certainly a manageable disease.

There are two types of diabetes; Type I which is usually diagnosed during childhood, and Type II which is generally diagnosed after the age of 18.  Each require a different set of diabetes treatment, mainly because a person with Type I does not produce any insulin on their own while a person with Type II is just extremely insulin resistant or makes very little insulin.

Type I diabetics basically have to take insulin in some form.  There are now several options of diabetes treatment, though, which can make the process much more manageable especially for those weary of needles.  The standard treatment is to use insulin by needle self injection as little as once per day and as much as six to eight times per day.  There are both short and long acting insulins and most likely a person with Type I diabetes will need to take a mixture of both.  If you are not fond of the idea of needles, there is now an insulin inhaler that has just been introduced to the market.  It is not widely used yet, but when discussing your diabetes treatment with your doctor be sure to ask about it.

In addition, the most cutting edge diabetes treatment is the use of an insulin pump.  An insulin pump site is inserted once every three days and acts like an external pancreas, giving the patient continuous short acting insulin to keep the constant blood sugar levels in normal ranges.  When eating, the patient self administers insulin through the pump rather than giving shots.  Realistically, I have found this to be the best diabetes treatment for myself because I have been able to adjust my insulin rates down to the half hour rather than taking shots and waiting for the insulin to react.  While on the pump, I have been able to take my A1C levels (a three month overview of sugar levels) from 7.1 to as low as 4.2 during pregnancy.  Normal ranges are 4.0 to 7.0, so my doctors were quite pleased with this as was I.

Be sure to check out all of your options and take an active role in your diabetes treatment.  The disease is quite manageable, especially if you take control and ask questions.

Are You Gaining Weight?

So was I.  I gained over 20 pounds in 3 months and didn't know what was going on.  My eating habit hadn't changed but I was tired and exhausted all the time.  I even suffered from depression. The depression was to the point I wanted to cry all the time. The depression was so bad until I made an appointment with my doctor. I had blood work done and even an MRI but no real problems was found except an increased prolactin level. My doctor suspected an underactive thyroid but the test result didn't show it.  Being a nurse I know the symptoms of hypothyroidism but never put it all together.  After researching it out, blood test does not always show abnormal TSH.

Your weight gain could be caused by an under active thyroid or hypothyroidism. It afflicts millions of people every year. It is a result of a decrease in the production of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). The pituitary is the gland that produces this hormone. The thyroid regulates the metabolism which helps to control weight. Without TSH in inadequate amounts, weight gain occurs. Often hypothyroidism weight gain is overlooked or attributed to some other underlying ailment.

Although hypothyroidism is easy to treat, losing the weight is sometimes difficult. This is the problem I was having.  I had test work done which should a increased prolactin level but TSH was normal.  So I was not put on thyroid medication.  What I found to help bring my thyroid in balance was Thyromine.  Because of an underactive thyroid or sluggish thyroid, I was gaining weight uncontrollably. Thyromine has guglipid which is an ayruvedic medicine used to treat obesity, arthritis and lipid problems.

Gaining weight may not be your fault so don't be a victim. Get control over your weight, improve your thyroid function and start losing weight.  The holidays are around the corner.
