Types of Alcohol And Drug Treatment Reviewed

Alcohol and drug abuse is an ever growing problem in our society and the demand for treatment is growing too. Alcohol and drug treatment overlaps in many ways. Both types of addiction can have social and psychological causes and some people are genetically predisposed to these conditions. The two organizations, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous have helped a lot of people.

There are various methods of bringing people off alcohol and drug addiction, which have become established over the years. Alcohol and drug treatment can often involve individual counseling, self help groups or group therapy. There are residential rehabilitation centers, in patient and out patient care. Some treatment programs take the approach of Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Psychotherapy.

The first thing to do when dealing with addiction is to stop intake of the substance, cope with the physical side effects and then undergo an after care program. Alcohol and drug treatment must not only break the cycle of addiction but prevent the chances of relapse. Prescribed drugs can help with some side effects, including the anxiety felt by many addicts as they go thru both physical and emotional trauma.

The most commonly used method with regard to alcoholism is detoxification. This means the body has to get used to the lack of alcohol in the system. Withdrawal symptoms can be helped with drugs such as Diazepam or Phenobarbital. Some withdrawal can last a few weeks, but gradually becoming less intense. Detoxification must be followed by some sort of therapy, preferably one which discovers the psychological causes of the drinking. Many alcohol addiction programs are successful, providing the participant sees the program thru to the end. Some alcohol and drug treatment can involve the use of Acupuncture for those people wanting to avoid medication.

The methods for treating drug addicts is determined by factors such as the type of drug and how often and how much the drug has been taken. The most used program is the 12 Step Recovery Program. It's very important that drug addicts break off contact with other users and with dealers. Some programs advocate the use of a replacement drug such as Methadone. This is a controversial issue as Methadone is an addictive drug itself, but it is easier for a lot of people to use it to wean themselves off all recreational drugs eventually. For some people, cold turkey is the only way. As with all alcohol and drug treatment, it's a question of finding the right treatment for the individual.

Using a Liver Cleanser

If you are interested in keeping your body healthy, then you should find out more information about using a liver cleanser especially if you have already been diagnosed with liver disease.  The liver is an important organ in the body, and if your liver fails, or is riddled with disease, you will lose, at the very least, the ability to enjoy your life to the fullest.  Liver disease, if left unopposed, will even cause death.  Because the liver is so important, let’s see how easy it is to find and use a liver cleanser.

Finding a liver cleanser will be easy when you know where to look.  The first place you should start is your heath food store.  Besides being able to buy any products you will need, health food stores are also a great place to get information.  You will often find free pamphlets that will educate you about the latest findings of diseases and how to treat them.  The employees in most health food stores will be able to give you advice about the most popular liver cleansers and how to use them.  One such popular liver cleanser is milk thistle.

Milk thistle is a liver detoxifier that relieves congestion of the liver, spleen, and kidneys. Today, several scientific studies suggest that active substances in milk thistle (particularly silymarin) protect the liver from damage caused by viruses, toxins, alcohol, and certain drugs such as acetaminophen (a common over the counter medication used for headaches and pain; acetaminophen, also called paracetamol, can cause liver damage if taken in large quantities or by people who drink alcohol regularly.)

You may also want to try an internet search when getting more information about a liver cleanser.  If you are able to find a forum about liver cleansers, or cleansers in general, you will be able to ask your questions and get the advice of many people that have already tried different products.   If you have a particular product in mind that you want to use, you may be able to find testimonials of how it worked for previous consumers.  The internet will also give you a larger selection of places to order your liver cleanser from.  Be sure to read the ingredients of each product and research these ingredients so you are confident you are getting the best liver cleanser for you.

When using a liver cleanser, you should feel comfortable with the product and the process.  If you are unsure of how to use one, or you want professional help, be sure to consult with a doctor before trying the product.  They may be able to tell you about another product or option that you weren’t aware of.

Good News about Bipolar Disease

Bipolar disease is an affliction that affects countless people world wide. Many people suffer with this emotional disorder for their entire lives without getting the medical attention that they need. Bipolar disorder is treatable with therapy and medication but the sad truth is that the disease goes undetected and undiagnosed in many individuals.

The problem with diagnosing bipolar disease is that the symptoms are a little tricky to pinpoint. The individual who has the disorder will swing on an emotional ride that takes him from one extreme to the other. While this may seem quite easy to detect it is not without examination and consideration from a professional.

The difficultly lies in the fact that everyone has mood swings. An individual who has bipolar disease will have no other point of reference than his own experience. He may think that everyone goes through these changes in moods just because that is his own experience.

It isn't until the individual is unable to function normally that the bipolar disease becomes apparent. However, this usually occurs when the individual is in a deep state of depression. Since the person or his concerned family will seek help during the depressive state the physician may misdiagnose the individual with depressive disorder rather than bipolar disease.

There is significant trouble with this misdiagnosis because the medication and treatment that are commonly used to treat depression are quite different than those used to treat bipolar disease. Basically, you are only treating one aspect of the problem.

An individual who has bipolar disease needs a mood stabilizer like lithium rather than an antidepressant. The mood stabilizing medication will help the individual find the balance that he so desperately needs. When the person does not get the proper treatment, he may try to self-medicate.

Individuals who have bipolar disease may seek other means of stabilizing themselves. Common practices are drugs and alcohol among this population. This only exaggerates the overall problem in the long run.

It is important to look at the entire picture. Does the individual go from one extreme to the other? How can you tell when a person is in a manic state? These are serious questions to consider before seeking help.

An individual who has bipolar disease may show signs when he is in a manic state. His pattern of speech may quicken and he may talk incessantly. Spending binges are a big sign of bipolar disease as well. It is important to consider these episodes and communicate them to your doctor if you are seeking treatment for depression.

Understanding Bach Flower Remedies

An English doctor by the name of Edward Bach developed Bach Flower Remedies in the early twentieth-century. He was trained initially in orthodox medicine, but later turned to the more holistic form of natural medicine and homeopathy to treat the whole person. The thirty-eight flower remedies originally created by him are still used in various forms today in alternative treatment.

Though these herbal remedies are sometimes confused with aromatherapy, the process of procuring a plant’s healing properties is markedly different. In aromatherapy, steam or alcohol distillation occurs to extract the oil from the plant. With Bach Flower Remedies, the properties are taken after floating the plant on spring water and exposing them to sunlight, allowing the nutrients to transfer into the water.

Following this process, the concentrated amount of the plant extraction and an equal amount of brandy is added together, that comprises the main bottle of which further tinctures can be made. Several drops from the first bottle, added with more water and brandy dilute the mixture become the basis of Bach Flower Remedies.

Each remedy is associated with a certain emotional state, and people react differently to each remedy. Dr. Bach believed that this affected the way that different people reacted to different illnesses. Some well trained homeopaths attest to knowing what flower remedies are needed just by ascertaining the personality of their patients.

Different combinations of Bach Flower Remedies can be used in different times and in different circumstances. The remedies now feature in many health food stores and can also be found in popular drugstores in the United Kingdom.

The most popular and well known of the Bach flower remedies is the Rescue Remedy, which contains a mixture of several plants. It is used in times of emergency and does not need any specialized knowledge to be used. It can be taken before an exam or interview, and can be used before a traumatic event, such as an operation. It is one of the best antidotes to treating shock or fear, and I have used it on a number of occasions to combat my fear of flying. It is simple to use as well- drops are taken with a glass of water or placed under the tongue. If a person is unable to swallow, it can be dabbed on the lips and absorbed as a remedy.

Bach Flower Remedies remain very popular today and now number into the hundreds. Their lasting power stands as a testament to their effectiveness for treating a range of both physical and mental ailments. Though different from aromatherapy oils, they are compatible with them and can be used at the same time.

Is Acidophilus Good for Your Digestive System?

There are good and bad bacteria as far as our health goes. With 60 to 70 million Americans suffering from various digestive diseases, that means we need to pay attention to those little critters working 'round the clock inside of our bodies.

Acidophilus, a common organism in yogurt and cultured milk products, such as kefir, that are said to foster a healthy balance of bacteria in the stomach. It's one of the "good" or "friendly" ones, out of about 400 types of bacterial that live in our intestinal tract and, for women, in the vagina as well. It's helpful because it aids manufacturing of B vitamins and production of lactase and other antibacterial agents.

Without good bacteria, also called probiotics, living in the gut, digestive processes go haywire. In a healthy state, our bodies just naturally maintain the proper balance. Some of the things that disrupt the natural functioning of our gut are preservatives and other additives in our foods, diets with a very high content of fat, birth control pills, alcohol consumption, and even stress.Acidophilus supplementation can help when things are out of balance.

Eating yogurt won't necessarily help. You have to read the labels because some of the yogurt on grocery store shelves don't actually contain any viable acidophilus due to the fact that they've been highly processed. It's difficult to process foods so that we're safe from harmful bacteria and yet keep the helpful bacteria alive.

Here are some of the potential benefits of supplementing your diet with acidophilus. A really big one is the suppression of candida, a type of yeast that can be very harmful, especially to our reproductive system and urinary tract. If you like to visit other countries, you'll be happy to know that supplementing your diet with acidophilus while abroad can help thwart proliferation of infectious organisms people commonly encounter in countries that do not have highly developed systems of public health.

It can also help control both diarrhea and constipation. And it helps reduce internal gas, bloating and bad breath. Some find that it even helps counteract lactose intolerance and helps lower cholesterol due to its enhancement of the body's ability to absorb fats. There's more. It may also enhance immune system function, aid in the treatment of respiratory infections such as sinusitis and bronchitis, and lower the risk of asthma, hay fever and eczema. Not bad for an organism too tiny to see with the naked eye.
