Unemployment And Health Care Issues

The rising unemployment in the United States is causing a grave issue when it comes to insurance. While many Americans receive their care benefits as a result of employment, not to mention other insurance benefits such as life insurance and accidental death insurance, many are finding themselves unemployed with a decreased income and without the money or resources to insure themselves or their families.

Health insurance through a private pay policy can be a very expensive venture and one that many people who have just had a drastic decrease in income just can’t afford. This can leave them with a big dilemma, eat or pay for health insurance coverage. While most unemployed Americans do receive unemployment benefits these meager short term benefits are usually not ample enough to allow for health insurance coverage in addition to other living expenses.

Although the government offers COBRA, to unemployed Americans, where they are able to carry the same coverage that their employers had provided, this tends to cost these individuals more money then they were originally paying. So even though it is a great plan, that allows individuals to to maintain coverage they can no longer afford it because they do not have an employer supplementing their premiums.

There was a short period of time when the government supplements the COBRA plan, however many were unaware of this additional funding. The majority of those that were aware, still found it to expensive to purchase a medical coverage plan. This should tell you a little something about how much medical coverage for these individuals can be.

For the unemployed with families, Medicaid provides medical coverage for the children, but only if you fit into the low income family bracket. Adults, on the other hand are offered no medical coverage through Medicaid, leaving them without a job, a decreased income and no medical coverage. Since it is difficult to find medical coverage while you are unemployed many are going without and searching each day for a job that can offer them the medical coverage that they require to adequate tend to their medical needs and the needs of their family.
