Alternative | Scabies Cure – My Personal Experience With What Works And What Doesn\’t

If you’ve ever had scabies or known anyone with scabies then you know how difficult it is to get free of them. When you go onto the internet to look for a cure you’re greeted with a large array of information from doctor recommended cures to home remedies including taking a bath in hydrogen peroxide. While many of these remedies work to a certain degree, we found that none of them, except one, gave us the relief we were looking for. In this article I will discuss my personal journey and that of my family to freedom.

You’re kidding! Scabies? Us? That was my first reaction when I learned that the rash that had been on my 10 and 13 year old sons was indeed caused by the scabies mite. The doctor sent us home with a prescription for Permethrin. Facing difficult financial times and having just spent $70.00 for the doctor appointment, we only had the money to fill the $35.00 prescription for one of our sons. Permethrin only comes in a single dose in a tiny tube so we put it on the 10 year old, since he was worse off than the 13 year old. We then waited a couple of days to see if it would work.

While we waited, we began to look on the internet to research Permethrin and to look at what other treatments might be available. We became alarmed to find that the side effects of Permethrin have included abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and/or vomiting, headache and dizziness, numbness and tingling, and in rare occurrences, seizure. At this point we felt bad that we had given such a strong topical pesticide to our son and decided to pursue a less toxic means for a cure. Besides that, the treatment seemed to have only limited success as it did not completely eliminate the scabies mites.

First we found a product on the internet called “Cedarcide”. This is a natural product derived from cedar trees where they have added a natural ingredient to kill all kinds of pests including fleas, scorpions, and head lice to name a few. This product also seemed to work well, but we had a problem. We have a large family with 10 children, (all our own) and it cost $75.00 per one gallon plus another $15.00 shipping. We went through our first gallon in a week, but because we were going through difficult financial times at that time, we were unable to purchase our second gallon right away. It took about 6 or 7 days to get the second gallon. This enabled the scabies mites to come back somewhat and we realized that we would need to spend yet another $90.00 on top of the $180.00 already spent in another week. We didn’t even know for sure if we would be free in that time.

The next thing we tried was the Lysterine cure. With this “cure” you apply citrus flavored Lysterine all over your body, from your neck down, with a spray bottle. You then let it dry on your skin and then take a shower and wash it off. We stayed with this treatment for some time because it seemed to work and we were able to get some sleep. The problem was that we were never able to completely overcome the scabies mites with this way of treating them.

We then went to experimenting with essential oils of various kinds. We used Tea tree oil but my wife found it hard to sleep because of the pungent smell. We tried orange oil with coconut oil as a carrier oil. We also tried pine oil with peanut oil as a carrier oil. Sometimes I thought the scabies mites were enjoying the oils and eating them or taking oil baths as those “cures” didn’t seem to have much effect on them. We then started to use hand sanitizer and/or rubbing alcohol that we put into a spray bottle and sprayed all over our body several times a day. This killed some of them but again, not all. This “cure” also would make the kids cough and our eyes and noses run.

The problem we were having with all of these treatments is that none were working quickly enough. Also, because the scabies mites burrow under the skin, they are protected to a large degree from most treatments available. What we needed was a cure that would work quickly and penetrate deep enough to kill the scabies mites and at the same time, not be toxic to us and our children.
