Q&A: How do I apply essential oils to bacillus subtilis?
Question by Becca: How do I apply essential oils to bacillus subtilis?
Hi! I’m doing a somewhat advanced science fair project as it is required by my school, and I have never worked with bacteria. I’m only in 7th grade so it’s understandable =D. Anyway, My experiment is to see if essential oils, like cinnamon oil, lavender oil, and so on can be used as antibacterials against the bacteria. I really have no clue how to get the essential oils on the bacteria, is there a special disk I need to put over it or something? Thank you soo much! Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Your science teacher should be able to tell you, but…
Are you using petri dishes? You could cut out very small squares of an absorbent paper, like water color paper, label them A, B, C, etc. with a waterproof pen, put a drop of each essential oil you’re testing and put the paper in the petri dish. If the essential oil stops bacteria growth, then stuff will grow around it, in some distance away from the little square, and if the oil doesn’t stop it, it will grow right over it.
