Q&A: Why are the Homeopathy “skeptics” wasting so much of their time/life?

Share

Question by Fukken Über Death Party: Why are the Homeopathy” wasting so of time/life?
Instead of helping people, and perhaps engaging in a life, these “skeptics” sit around Yahoo! Answers and disprove

I, frankly, could not care less whether this works or not. I think it’s really an elaborate placebo, but that’s irrelevant.

The question at hand is, why do these skeptics waste so much of their time just complaining to each other when no one cares except themselves?
I’m on here because my class doesn’t start for another 30 minutes, so I really DON’T have anything to do with my life at the moment.
Skyhawk-

Well, then why is Christianity not as dangerous? People walking around believing a zombie saved them?
The reason is because…
survival of the fittest, let them believe what they want.
If they think that it works, let them think that! Eventually people will realize (ALL ON THEIR OWN) that it does not work.

Besides, I’m sure it does have a small percentage of people that it has worked on. Placebo effect
DEAR “

I find it ironic that you’re basing my education off of my appearance. I am in college, and (unlike you) am able to spell, use correct grammar and punctuation.

By the way, I’m sure you mean serendipity.

Lastly, try to the question at hand.

Most of the people here are doing a great job at answering my question, though.

I think the main issue is that they believe that scientifically verifiable information is the only valid type of information. They believe that disseminating any other type of information is a type of malpractice, and often a “snake oil” scam to hurt people. To them, homeopathic medicine is similar to allowing unlicensed doctors to practice medicine. But the key is that they think it is largely a scam to part innocent people from their money.

pelops_dl @ 3:24 pm:

Well for one it isn’t as if this is all we do all the time.

It isn’t a waste of time to try to disuade people from taking water instead of chemotherapy for their cancer. It isn’t a waste of time trying to show that homeopathic preventatives for malaria don’t prevent malaria.

I honestly wouldn’t give homeopathy much more than a chuckle if they weren’t claiming to be able to cure diabetes thus leading people to stop taking insulin. That isn’t a waste of time at all. This is the type of thing that homeopaths are doing, too.

But I really only spend maybe 15 minutes a day on average answering questions.

The homeopathic practitioner parents of a child with eczema refused to have the disease treated in a standard manner. Because they preferred to eschew medicine because of their irrational beliefs about medicine their daughter died a painful death. I don’t see how trying to stop somethign like that from happenign again as being a waste of time. If you didn’t realize that homepathy had a body count you would not have asked that question. Pointing out this sort of thing to people like you who are unaware of teh hearm homeopathy can do also makes this a worthwhile task.

http://www.whatstheharm.net for more reasons why I post against homeopathy here.

JennaSea @ 3:40 pm:

I want to know why questions disappear after the heat is turned on. Recent questions about “If homeopathy doesn’t work then” has vanished as far as I can tell. The questioner was referring to the use of homeopathic remedies in animals and how a placebo would not explain why animals have been helped by homeopathy. Answers reflected IMO a lack of thought when stated that animals don’t talk. Well, duh, they don’t talk with conventional medicine either. Anyways, where do questions go?
And I think the skeptics feel threatened financially or worry about their world view being shattered or truly believe that alternative practitioners really are just doing it for the money. Let me tell you the last is not the truth. Practitioners who think outside the box and go against the grain do it from conviction and a desire to help people experience a deeper kind of wellness. It is not an easy job. We spend a lot of time with people and share very deep experiences with them and we work for ourselves, hence there is no security but in results themselves.

angrydoc @ 3:43 pm:

Answering ignorance isn’t wasting time. Countering quackery with the truth isn’t wasting time. Frankly I think between the two of us, it’s you who’s wasting time ranting on something you yourself tell us you don’t care about. I’m a medical doctor and while I get paid for my services, I still see it as helping people. I also have a life, I have friends and family and hobbies. As pelops_d said, going in Y! Answers takes only minutes of my precious time.

Soul Doctor, don’t dare claim that only you have a monopoly on wanting to help people. You’re also very insulting with your baseless accusations. Show proof that skeptics are paid or shut up. You also have not answered any questions on homeopathy’s efficacy nor on it’s mechanisms of actions. until then expect me and the other skeptics to keep countering your nonsense.

x @ 3:46 pm:

Most of the internet is pointless but YA is as good a place to waste time as anywhere.

I find it more interesting to discuss science than to discuss whether someone smells of onions, or can get pregnant through fingering… but, hey, that’s just me.

BatMan @ 4:13 pm:

It would be nice if none of us got sick. Or hurt. Or even slightly sniffly. And we do our best to prevent it, don’t we? We eat our fruits and vegetables, lay off hot dogs and munch only whole grain snack. We swear we’ll never look at those long, snowy loves of French bread again. Or the high-fat cheeses that go with them. And we take 35-minute walks through our neighborhoods four times a week to seal the bargain. Well, maybe three times a week.

What are we doing, of course, is trying to practice good preventive care. And for the most part we succeed. But live amid a stew of microorganisms determined to give us everything from sore throats, wheezes and sneezes to sore bottom, aching joints and queasy stomachs.

That’s why Listen to Your Body was written. Whenever your body is under attack ans sending out messages of pain, selling, sneezing, aching, nausea or whatever, Listen to Your Body can translate. With the flip of a page it can tell you what those messages mean, what causes them and what practitioners experts suggest you do about them.

Take discolored urine, for example. Normal urine usually ranges from Crystal clear to Dark yellow. But let’s say one morning you get up and go to the bathroom, then notice that the urine in your toilet bowl is red. “My God!” you think. “I must be bleeding inside!”

You don’t panic. Instead you head straight for the bookshelf in your living room,(how did I know you kept your copy in the living-room) take down your copy of Listen to Your Body and turn to chapter 18 Urine, Discolored and find out about a one-minute test-made from materials usually found in your kitchen-to tell whether or not there’s blood in your urine.

What’s in this homemade(Homeopathy, I would say.)blood detector? Baking soda. You sprinkle it into the toilet bowl, and if the red goes away, then returns when you add a few drops of vinegar, you can be sure that it was last night’s beets-and not this morning’s blood-that tie-dyed your urine red. If your urine doesn’t change color the way Listen to Your Body describes, the book’s practitioners
suggest you see a doctor. Pronto.

Paddy 1969 @ 4:55 pm:

Its not a waste of time at all to them. Unless someone higher up informs them they are not doing an effective job, and that consequently they might see a reduction in salary, commission, vacation time, etc.
