These days we all expect to live longer, and indeed, average life expectancy is on the rise. A newborn baby boy born in the UK could expect to live to 77.4 years and a newborn baby girl could expect to live to 81.6 years if mortality rates remain the same as they were up to 2008.

By analysing around 150 ‘signposts’ in these genes a research team from Boston University in the States has been able to develop a mathematical model or ‘scientific score card’ to calculate life expectancy and longevity.

Over 1,000 have been involved in the largest ever study of its kind. The study involved people that lived into the 100th year. The genes of these people were scanned and compared to the genes of other people randomly selected from the general population.

The team were then able to successfully identify genetic markers found in the individuals that lived into their first century that were distinctly different from those of the random selection taken. They were than able to test their theory and achieved an accuracy of over 77%.

However there are additional elements to consider when trying to determine age, such as the person’s diet, life style, working history and any addictions they may have surrendered to throughout the track of their life.
