Kidney Stone Treatment

Unless they sense pain and present of blood in their urine, individuals will not go to a physician for a medical exam. This is because individuals incline to neglect the hardship of the medical condition and its potential complications once not diagnosed and cared for early.

Experts tell that the problem why individuals who are worried from kidney stones is that they always tend to be complacent in keeping up with a healthy diet and regular exercise. They-deliberately or not deliberately-without realizing that they will suffer and spend more money once the condition gets worse over time.

The most common types of kidney stones among people are the calcium oxalate stones and uric acid stone, which are caused by too much calcium and sodium intake. These types of stones are not actually damaging unless they grow in size fast and obstruct the ureter–the tube that is attached to the bladder and will cause urination problems.

Treatments and Medication Available

Today, there are so many types of treatments and medications available for people with kidney stones. These treatments may vary depending on the condition’s severity. Experts say that people who have mild kidney stones can sort to medication, which are usually prescribed for certain types.

Medication is considered, as the initial form of treatment especially for symptomatic kidney stones which is common among patients. People showing early signs of kidney stones such as pain with varied intensity uses certain types of medication. The most common medication includes the Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs or NSAIDs like ibuprofen, which are effective in speeding up the passage of urethra stones along the ureter. These come in different brands, come in pill form and can be brought over the counter.

For severe pains, medication can be given directly through the vein to guarantee that it will take effect fast. This process of medication is also ideal for people who have low tolerance in taking oral pills. If NSAIDs cannot be administered directly, fluids can also be given to the patient suffering from the pain of kidney stones through the mouth to ensure that there will be enough supply of fluid for the urine.

Although medicinal drugs can be dispensed at home, there will be the need that the patient be brought in to the hospital particularly if the pain does not sink to normal level. Once hospitalized, the patient will be asked to strain urine in order to cover the stone and collected for laboratory analysis. Here, the type of stone will be determined as well as its size and number through an imaging test. Here, if your kidney stones are smaller than 5 millimeters, you’re safe to take medication. But if the stone is about 10 millimeters, you will need to undergo a procedure such as:

- Shock Wave Lithotripsy (SWL) which is the most common option of procedure because it can easily remove stones in the renal pelvis and upper ureter. This procedure requires x-ray or ultrasound to determine the exact location of the kidney stone and uses a high-energy shock wave to remove the stone by breaking it into pieces. However, this is not effective for hard, large, and complicated types of stones.

- Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PNL), on the other hand, is ideal for complex and extremely large kidney stones because it involves invasive surgical procedure in the process of removal which are small telescopic instruments passing through the person’s skin.

- Stones that are obstructed in the middle and lower portion of the person’s ureter can be removed by the process of Ureteroscopy. Here, a tiny telescopic instrument passes through the urethra and bladder and into the ureter and kidney to remove the kidney stones.

My dream is that 20,000 of my countrymen no longer die every year because they do not have insurance and can not pay for treatment.

My dream is that a broken arm, or a heart attack, no longer forces American families into bankruptcy.

My dream is that every child in this nation has regular dental and medical care, good nutrition, and a quality education.

My dream is that every American citizen can attend college, regardless of their family's income.

My dream is that the American dream is a real possibility again, not something you're born into, not something so precarious that a single hospital stay can take it all away and not something you pay 20-30% percent interest on. That's my dream.

would i know: I find it hard to believe your mama didn't teach you any better than that. The man is dead, show some respect.

TJ, she got her bill dismissed? Really? That must be a state program. AFDC was replaced by TANF in 1997. I know from when I was working temp jobs that TANF's income ceiling is quite low. I didn't qualify for help and I really needed it. The hospital wouldn't write off my surgery like they did your daughter's. The billing clerk gave me a payment plan because I was working part-time, but getting the bill dismissed was out of the question. But then, I live in a red state. We have the highest number of uninsured children in the country, unless the recession has caused another state to take the number one spot. Many states have good healthcare, but mine just isn't one of them. That's why we need to fix it on a national level.
