Facts About Car Accident Injuries
Car accidents can cause many types of injuries; from minor cuts, scrapes and bruises to more serious or even fatal trauma. Head, neck and back injuries are by far the most common injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents. However, other parts of the body may be seriously injured as well due to car accident injuries.
Whiplash is usually a minor injury, with recovery occurring quickly in most cases; it can cause long lasting pain. Other more serious brain injuries are also possible, usually occurring in side impact collisions. Traumatic brain injury may cause such symptoms as dizziness, seizures, headaches, memory loss and can even result in permanent impairment. Traumatic brain injury is diagnosed through CT and MRI scans.
Back injuries occur frequently in car accidents and may involve muscle, nerves, ligaments or vertebral discs. In much the same way neck tissue is injured in whiplash, the soft tissue of the spinal area may be traumatized causing inflammation and pain. These injuries may require extensive treatment such as prescription medication, ongoing physical therapy or even surgery.
Many of the internal organs of the body can be damaged during a motor vehicle accident. These injuries may be more serious and require hospitalization and surgical procedures for recovery. One of the most serious internal injuries sustained in a car accident is a torn spleen, usually resulting in a lengthy hospital stay.
Broken limbs, both upper and lower body are commonplace in car accidents. These injuries usually require splinting or casts. However, in some cases, especially in severe hip, knee and shoulder injuries surgery may be necessary.
Car accidents happen every day and chances are, we will all be involved in at least one sometime in our lives. Many times, there are minimal injuries, with whiplash, bumps and bruises being the most common. However, in some cases car accident injuries that are traumatic can result in lengthy hospitalizations, extensive rehabilitation or even permanent disabilities.
