Kevin @ 10:20 am:
Terry,
I am not a medium, although I have just begun to sit in a developement circle, but I have been a Spiritualist for a number of years. I have also been a committee member for my Spiritualisy Church and have served as the treasurer. I can asure you that in no way does the Church make money out of Spiritualism, indeed, it often struggles to survive financially. The Mediums that serve the Church do so with no charge for their services. They are offered a small recompense for their travel expenses, and many will often refuse to accept that. Donations are welcomed, but are purely a voluntary thing. If it were not for these small donations, most of the churches would close, leaving a dearth of places where one could obtain Spiritual teachings.
I would always advise people to avoid events such as “Psychic Fairs” as these are usually run for profit, although some are for charity, and they are not designed to impart teachings. They are often more for entertainment of the punters, and the quality of the readings is often very poor.
Mediums who strive to make profit from their gifts often find their gift diminishes as their Spirituality becomes tainted with materialism.
I agree that access to teachings is limited, but it is not limited to those who can pay, but to those who are prepared to seek out the places where the teachings can be found.
I know from personal experience that until I was ready to recieve such teachings, I was unaware of them. I believe that to try and force teachings on a person who is not ready (ie at a level of personal developement whereby they are receptive) can have a detrimental effect on that person. When that person is ready, as I was, then I believe the opportunity will present itself. It is then up to that person to decide to accept or reject.
Sad to say, it is often a personal tragedy that leads many people to seek for answers that conventional religions fail to provide. It is at this time they often become more recptive and their quest for knowledge begins, often with just the desire to “get a message” from a departed loved one. They may, of course, become ensnared by the psychics at fairs, or by the mediums who charge for private sittings, and remain unaware of the vast repository of knowledge and teaching that is available for little or no charge at their local Spiritualist Church.
As for books on the subject costing a lot of money, and being written for profit, my answer is make use of your local library. It's a great free resource.
Maybe the whole point of this world is that it is a physical and materialistic one, for it give us the chance to change OUR lives. If it was a totally spiritual world would it be able to give our lives purpose?
